Vegan diet where have you been all my life? I've never enjoyed food this much!

My Vegan Transition I'm Sarah, a 27 year old vegan living in Aberdeen with my proud pampered pooch Bonnie. Every member of my family of 5 are animal lovers and have been vegetarian at some point, my brother is currently the only one who eats meat. My sister was first to take the dedicated vegetarian leap as a young teenager, closely followed by my mum and brother, then myself. At the time my dad was a 'red-meat vegetarian' and later gave up chicken and fish after a holiday to France where he seen fish taking their last breaths.
It wasn't until late 2009 when my dad watched a TV documentary about traces of pus and hormones being in cows milk. On researching this, my brother came across the sad and shocking truth about dairy. I selfishly chose to turn a blind eye at the time but that was soon opened in January 2010 after having suffered a miscarriage. I gave up drinking on the spot, making the compassionate decision to turn vegan. I made it my goal to become vegan within 6 months, giving up one dairy product at a time, becoming stricter along the way. Like many non-vegans, I had favourite things that I didn't want to miss out on. So before becoming vegan, I set myself this personal challenge: "I will become vegan as long as I can find substitutes for all the things I love." This continues to be the part that I am most proud of, the fact that not only did I manage to replace chocolate with a love for vegan baking hobbies, I found a new love for all things food. I also managed to concoct my very own recipe for one of my all-time favourite creamy Irish Whiskey liquor! It might sound odd to an uneducated meat-eater, but I am eating a more varied, healthier diet than I was as a vegetarian. I feel fresher and healthier for it too! |
